DATA-ENABLED LIFE SCIENCES ALLIANCE

DELSA Workshop IV

May 16-17, 2013

DoubleTree Bethesda, Bethesda, MD

Meet Larry Smarr. In exquisite detail.

Contributing to science: Each of us can do it, in ways big and small. On May 16th and 17th, 2013 the Data-Enabled Life Sciences Alliance (DELSA Global, delsaglobal.org) will contribute through its fourth meeting in Washington DC. DELSA Global is an example of the new scientific potential that can come from transdisciplinary collective innovation applied to recently available massive data sets. Our mission is to “Accelerate the impact of data-enabled life science research on the pressing needs of the global society”. DELSA Global is already catalyzing connections to develop the interactions needed for effective and sustainable science. When stakeholders can be brought together through physical or virtual proximity, ideas can be shared, new insights generated, and novel collaborations created that would not have happened otherwise.

We are excited to introduce a new format this year. Dr. Larry Smarr, the distinguished physicist and computer scientist at University of California San Diego and pioneer in the field of quantified human biology, will be our keynote speaker. You can read more about some of Dr. Smarr's contributions to science in this article from The Atlantic:

Day 1: Quantified Human DataQuest – DELSA Global has been given access to unprecedentedly rich and diverse data sets of the micro- and macro-biological dynamics of individual humans, including those of Dr. Smarr. The depth and breadth of the datasets make this a unique resource that requires an innovative approach developed by a diverse group. We will formulate priorities, evaluate metrics and outcomes, and initiate classic and emerging analyses of these data.

Day 2: Lightning Talks: We invite you to give a 5 minute presentation on your research, current challenges, and grand opportunities you see in data-enabled life sciences. You will also hear briefly about some of DELSA’s Endorsed Projects, Working Groups, virtual and physical Hubs, and plans.

DW4 will be friendly, exciting, informative, and interactive!

Two days of shared goals and progress; this will definitely not be business as usual in DC.
